Musclepharm Combat Protein Powder Review – Milk Chocolate

Hello and thank you all for coming to my Musclepharm Combat Protein Powder Review! Today’s flavor of choice is Milk Chocolate, and – spoiler alert – it’s good.

I’ve recently had the pleasure of consuming a colorful selection of new products for the purpose of getting more reviews out, and I wanted to start with the protein powders because I’ve been using them the most. I think it’s what most people use as far as sports nutrition supplements go. I could be wrong, if you think otherwise just leave me a comment down below.

So! This is the first of my two Musclepharm reviews to be released here this week, this one of course being the chocolate, and vanilla will be coming along shortly.

The review will break down in the following way:

  • Intro (You are here!)
  • Who is Musclepharm
  • Nutrition
  • Taste
  • Texture
  • Value
  • Where to Buy
  • Verdict

Let’s get right at it then, shall we?

Who is Musclepharm anyway?

Musclepharm is an American Sports Nutrition and Supplement company that has been supplying the world with high quality products for years. You’ve probably seen their products around before, if you haven’t tried some already. The packaging usually incorporates some kind of bright green that really makes it pop.

Much like the other big brands, Musclepharm has its own list of awesome athletes that proudly and publically represent the brand. Some big names include: TJ Dillashaw, Jake Shields, and Marcus Buchecha. Many of them appear to be martial arts practitioners, which is a sort of unique angle to promote the company rather than just weightlifters.

Not just the athletes, but the product lineup for Musclepharm is quite impressive as well. Beyond protein, they also provide, pre and post workout, BCAAs, Creatine, Fat Burners, Mass Gainers, Multivitamins, Nutrition Bars, and more.

They also have a special line of products made specifically for female athletes – Fitmiss!

Musclepharm is highly regarded for their principles in the sports nutrition world. Their products are always free of banned ingredients and are thoroughly tested (and approved) by not only the white coats at the lab, but by athletes around the world as well. They also speak of award-winning flavors, Informed Choice certification, and a 30 day money back guarantee. Well well, pretty serious stuff we have here!

If you want more info, feel free to check out the website here, which is full of other great stuff like recipes and workouts.

Here are some of the highlights from the nutrition facts:

  • 130 Calories per serving
  • 1.5g Fat per serving
  • 5g Carbohydrates
  • 25g Protein

This all falls into the average range for your standard protein powders. Calories often range around the 100-200 mark and protein is usually about 20-30g per scoop. The fats are kept low, as are the carbs if you’re counting.

One point I want to stop on is the one they advertise on the front of the package. 5 sources of protein it says, let’s look a little further.

Turning the label gives us a little more insight into what we’re devouring. The 5 proteins are whey hydrolysate, whey isolate, whey concentrate, egg albumin, and micellar casein. Did I mention whey yet?

The reason they use a variety of proteins like this is to provide a more versatile protein supplement that not only gives you the fuel you need now, but what you’ll be needing later too. Where the whey hydrolysates and isolates are faster acting, they’re well complimented by the slower-releasing casein.

It’s not an original idea that is exclusive to the Musclepharm products, but sometimes advertised as a hybrid formula of sorts.

It is also worth pointing out that there are BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine) in the ingredients list as well. It just doesn’t say specifically how much. They’ll help promote faster muscle recovery and slow the breakdown process. Read more about BCAAs here.

Now this is where it really sells to me, the taste! I normally go into every kind of chocolate protein powder with a deep breath, knowing that some are all chalk and no chocolate.

But this does not have that problem.

It goes down smooth and tastes delicious to boot, thankfully. Despite being so good on the flavor chart, there’s actually only 2g of sugar per scoop. What’s the secret then? There is some sucralose and cocoa bean powder to compliment the taste. But that’s pretty much it.

Out of curiosity (and something I fully encourage) I decided to try mixing the powder with other things such as the vanilla powder, and even some light smooth peanut butter. Both experiments turned out great! That being said, try it out or even better, come up with your own unique recipes. It can add a little fun to the mundane art of drinking the same shakes on repeat.

So the bottom line is..

  • Tastes great and not full of junk, win win!

Ah the big question, how does it mix? You know how all of these brands say things like “mixes instantly” or “mixes great” right?

And so many times I’ve been burned by that false promise, haha.

But not in this case. Musclepharm Chocolate Milk Protein Powder mixes quickly and smooths out in no time. I’ve had too many chunky protein powders in my time so at least this is a nice break from the potential hazards of future reviews.

So not only tastes great, but mixes well too! We’re on a roll now.

  • Mixes quickly and the texture is not gritty at all

This might be my favorite part of every review. I like to know how much different companies charge for their products, often only marginally different in quality or ingredients. Some products are truly overrated in my not-so-humble opinion, and I’ll call it out if we come across this in the future.

So, remember my usual rule? Under a dollar per scoop is a safe way to go, any savings beyond that is all gravy.

So how much does this product usually go for?

I’ve checked out the Muscletech protein products at Walmart, Amazon, and and they’re generally under a buck per serving. Ex. 52 servings for under $52, which puts us in the clear here.

  • Good value for all the high quality product you get!

Where to Buy

Musclepharm products are commonly found at your general health and sports nutrition outlets, like GNC. Also popular at some supermarkets and department stores such as Walmart.

And at last, as always you can find these excellent products online:

And again I’d like to remind my readers that any of my aforementioned links are affiliate links. What this means is that I am able to provide you quality, approved products at no additional cost to the customers. And in return, Amazon for example, will pay a small return for any customer purchases made as a result of my website.

Consider helping a small family business by getting your next purchase through us! =)

I gotta say, I’m more impressed with these Musclepharm products (so far) than I thought I might be. Sure, today we’re only covering the Chocolate Milk flavor, but the Vanilla version is coming soon!

But back to the point. I’d say in the end, this particular protein hits hard on all fronts. It has a solid portion of protein (from multiple sources at that), BCAAs, and is low on carbs, sugars, and free of junk ingredients.

It tastes and mixes great, which is also a win!

And lastly, the price is good and the product isn’t hard to find at all.

How are we gonna score this anyway?

So that’s it in a nutshell! As always, I want to pass on a personal thank you for reading my review and visiting my website. If you’re looking to check out other reviews, or get some general health and wellness tips, check out what we have in the menus up top. And don’t forget, train safe!

All the best,

  1. Tyson,
Thanks for your candid review on Musclepharm Combat Protein powder. I work out often myself and often use an off-brand of protein powder. I’m afraid to say but I think it’s more full of junk than protein, so it was good to get an analysis on this product. I’m more of a chocolate fan, so this was right up my alley in regards to taste. When do you recommend taking protein? Thanks for your review!

    • Hey Bobby welcome to the site!

And of course, it was my pleasure being able to provide reviews for you guys to read. As for when you’d take protein, its really good any time of the day. But there are some benefits to timing it too, like getting a shake or meal into you right after a workout is important for recharging and building your muscles back up.

Other stuff, like casein, is a slow release protein so often its taken at night and works while you sleep.

      All the best,

  2. I’m, much like you, the sucker for the taste. If it’s not tasting good, I’m screaming next! Regarding ingredients, it’s good to know that Musclepharm is taking care that their powders are free of junk ingredients, sugars, etc. I’m looking forward to your Vanilla review! And thanks for sharing the chocolate version.

  3. Thank you so much for your review! I usually hate the taste of protein powders because of the taste- I HATE the taste of most protein drinks. And less than a dollar per scoop is an awesome price! I think I’ll have to try this one when I finish up my current powder tub!
    Thanks again!
